Midway
Fish Species
Midway's waters have been justifiably
described as: "one of the worlds most virgin and protected fisheries." Numerous game fish, including six species of
trevally (ulua, papio, etc.), often roam the lagoon flats and outer reef edge, while
yellow fin and big eye tuna, wahoo, marlin, mahimahi (dorado) and other species are found
offshore.
Fishing is primarily on a catch and release
basis inside the lagoon and offshore. When offshore fishing, one fish per person,
per day may be kept to be consumed on the island. Fish may not be taken or shipped
from the refuge, with the exception of world record fish for mounting purposes.
Below is a guide to some of the species
available at Midway during the fishing season which runs from April through September. |
