Recreational Fishing at Midway
Atoll National Wildlife Refuge
Visitors to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge enjoy some of the most
spectacular recreational fishing in the world...and we plan to keep it that way!
Restrictions help conserve Midway's fishes, protect rare wildlife from disturbance, and
ensure that visitors and residents alike remain unexposed to the threat of ciguatera fish
poisoning. Please do your part to protect the marine environment.
Fishing within the lagoon:
- Anglers may use pole and line, spin tackle
and fly fishing gear only, and must release all fish alive.
- Only artificial lures with a single
barbless hook are allowed. Hooks may not be baited, but chum may be used.
- Shore angles who are approached by seals or
turtles must back off at least 100 feet or leave the area. All anglers on boats or
shore should retrieve their lines when turtles or seals swim into the area to avoid the
risk of accidental hooking of these animals.
- Shoreline fishing may occur only within
designated zones on Sand Island (the main island at Midway)
Fishing outside the lagoon (but
within refuge boundaries):
- Recreational anglers may catch pelagic
species such as ahi, mahi mahi, ono and marlin primarily on a catch and release basis.
- One fish per person on the fishing boat, per
day, may be kept for on-island consumption. The Refuge Manager may approve the
taking of additional pelagic fish within the refuge for consumption within the Galley and
Clipper House Restaurant
- Anglers may use lighted lures while night
trolling as long as no harmful seabird interactions occur.
