Midway Ulua Breaks Record |
| A 90-pound ulua
(giant trevally) was caught at Midway Wednesday by Gary Turkington of Leander, Texas on 20
pound test (breaking strain) line. The catch tops a 12-year-old International Game Fish
Association (IGFA) World Record that had been set in Australia. The 90 pounder is the 17th IGFA World Record at
Midway in the three years that the atoll has been open to the public. It took the visitor
from Texas 25 minutes to land his record fish.
Midway is part of the Northwest Hawaiian
Islands National Wildlife Refuge and as such, several conservation measures are in effect
to assure that the quality of the fishery and its related environment are maintained. The
only ulua landed at Midway are those that appear to be of world record proportions. All
others are tagged and released as part of an on-going research program to learn more about
the species. |
