Small Fry Ulua Record Beaten

Story from the Gooney Gazette, published by Midway Guest Services

Captain Bamboo did it again; he helped Bert Weeks of Oahu catch and release a Small Fry IGFA World Record Giant Trevally (GT).  Last week on board Bamboo’s boat this same World Record had been set at 33.3 pounds.  Angler Bert, 10 years old, broke that record with his whopper that weighed in at an impressive 41.3 pounds.   The fish was 39 inches long and had a girth of 12.5 inches.  Bert reeled this monster in on 16 lb test line using a 6-foot St Croix rod and a Shimano TLD15 casting reel.

This Ulua, as the fish is known in Hawaii, was not previously tagged so Bert was able to put in tag number 0071.  Now if the fish is caught again, due to tagging records, we will be able to identify the specific fish.  This will tell us if the GT feeds in the same location, how much it has grown, and if it is caught in another location besides Midway, how far it has traveled.

Captain Bamboo and Angler Bert Weeks

After all necessary weights and measurements, Captain Bamboo was able to successfully release this record-breaking fish.  Midway Sport Fishing has been able to live release five World Record fish this season.  This impressive statistic is likely to increase with four more months of fishing to go here on Midway.

After Bert watched the World Record be broken last week, he became convinced he could do even better.  He went out on a mission and succeeded.  Hats off to Bert for having the determination and skill necessary to catch, land, tag, and release a World Record “Bad Boy” Ulua.
