Small Fry Ulua Record

Gunner Wengler of Oahu, HI had a very exciting day today.  On board Captain Bamboo’s 22 ft. Glacier Bay, he caught a 33.3-pound World Record Giant Trevally (GT), otherwise known as a “Bad Boy” Ulua.  The 39-inch long, 12 inch wide fish qualified for a Small Fry Record under the International Game Fish Association.  Gunner was using a 6 ft St. Croix rod with a Shimano TLD20 casting reel spooled with 30 lb test line.

Gunner may only be 10 years old but already he has caught and tagged a Blue Marlin and now has entered the ranks of the World Record holders.  This young man is working toward an impressive career in Sport Fishing.

The GT had a tag in its dorsal area indicating that it had previously been caught and released.  The tag was number 0024.  After all the necessary weights, measurements and pictures were taken of the fish Captain Bamboo, who was wearing gloves and taking all necessary precautions to protect the health of the GT, revived the fish using proven techniques.  The feisty Ulua was then released back into the ocean.  Maybe we will see the “Bad Boy” again when he will be large enough to break the world record a second time.
