Barred Jack Record Beaten Just Hours Later |
| Story
from the Gooney Gazette, published by Midway Guest Services |
| Well, Adam Williams Barred
Jack World Record stood for about four hours. Angler Matthew Stewart boarded the
26 Glacier Bay with Capt. Mike Crosier after lunch this afternoon, May 30,
2001. They headed to the far side of Eastern Island where, on a St. Croix rod with a Penn 975 casting reel, Matthew hooked an All
Tackle World Record Barred Jack. This Carangoides ferdau was hooked using a
Wee Catch-em Fluorescent Green Grub on 20-pound Courtland line. Again,
the fish was kept alive in the boats fish-well for the trip back to the dock to be
weighed and measured. Everyone was a little unsure if this second fish would
outweigh the first until the scale tipped at 5.0 pounds, easily outdoing the Barred Jack
from this morning that came in at 4.1 pounds. This new World Record fish was
measured at 18.5 inches in length and 8 inches in girth. |

| Again, the fish was handled with care and
the formalities required to certify a World Record were taken care of quickly. For the fish to qualify for World Record status,
the angler must send the lure with the leader and 20 feet of line, pictures of the rod
used, photographs of the fish on the certified scales (weight visible and readable),
pictures of the fish with a ruler, measuring length and girth, and a completed application
with the signatures of three witnesses and a certifying ichthyologist to the International
Game Fish Association. After all of this was taken care of, the fish was revived and
released back into the ocean to fight another day.
Matthew is here on Midway
with his father and brother who own The Hook-Up! in Cape Cod,
Massachusetts. You can be sure that this is one fish tale that will be told and
retold over the counter of that store. Luckily, Matthew will have the IGFA World
Record Certificate to prove it
unless Adam decides to go out tomorrow and reclaim the
title. |
