Rick Gaffney Just two days
before the boats were pulled from the water ending the year 2000 fishing season, Midway
Atoll delivered another significant world record claim. This one is a 44 pound 6 ounce
Giant trevally landed by William McCue on 6 pound test line, on October 19, 2000.
McCue was fishing inside Midway's lagoon,
on one of Midway Sport Fishing's 22' center console boats, with Captain Mike Crosier. The
fish, which sported two tags indicating that it had been caught at least twice previously,
was weighed, measured, photographed and released alive. It easily tops the previous IGFA
World Record of 28 pounds 10 ounces, caught in Australia in 1997.
McCue is also a licensed captain who has
developed a reputation for his prowess in locating and catching Ulua for his guests. Less
than a month before landing his pending world record catch, McCue skippered for Honolulu
angler Mike House and picked up three Ulua estimated at 100 pounds and above. They also
managed a 35 pounder for their quarry that day, along with several other species such as
Hamachi, Hawaiian Grouper, and Uku.
McCue was 3 -for-17 prior to catching his
record claim. Midway also produced the women's world record for Giant trevally on 6 pound
test line (38 pounds 11 ounces) and has delivered 18 IGFA world records since it was first
opened to anglers in 1997. |
