Fishing Packages on the Sea of Cortez
| For anglers looking for a way to
enjoy Baja California's amazing fishery without either camping in the wilderness or
bashing through the hustle and bustle of the nearby party town of Cabo San Lucas,
Destination:PACIFIC offers the relaxing and sensible alternative: |
| Fabulous East Cape on the
spectacular Sea of Cortez. Just 40 miles and a couple hundred
years from the San Jose Del Cabo International airport that serves the southern end of
Baja, East Cape is a spectacular array of remarkably green open range land, dotted here
and there with the palm-thatched palapas and haciendas of the families who inhabit this
sparse land. Within an hour of deplaning, anglers will be within sight of the Sea of
Cortez, past the prominent bluff of Los Frailles, and on into East Cape. |
 |
| The shady, pastel, quiet-calm of the
Cape is immediately refreshing at either of our two resorts; the Palmas De Cortez and the
Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort. Also refreshing is that first margarita sipped under
the thatched roof of a poolside bar, shaded by palms, citrus and flowering tropical
plantings. Colored concrete pathways wind languorously through lush vegetation
between rows bungalows and rooms, many with hammocks suspended between palm trees,
beckoning the lazy and the laid-back. |

|
While they are the largest resorts
on the East Cape, both the Hotel Buena Vista and the Palmas De Cortez are run more like
bed-and-breakfasts, with warm, hospitable service and endless smiles. The sweeping
white-sand beach that front the resorts define much of the 20-odd miles between from Punta
Pescadero (Fishermans Point), to the north, and Punta Colorado, to the south, as it
runs along the edge of the Bahia Los Palmas (Bay of Palms). |
| Turquoise shore waters drop quickly
into fishy-looking, blue-water depths, and the nearshore waters are dotted with scores of
moored game fishing boats, usually many of them flying impressive numbers of fish flags.
Bait-fish rippled the surface, and the predatory swoops of larger fish marked their
passage. Rising rather quickly behind the
beach are formidable bluffs, beyond which rises a substantial mountain ridge, the Sierra
de la Laguna, which rises to nearly 2100 meters at its highest peak, and causes the
afternoon sun to set without lingering.
After
sumptuous meals in the open and airy oceanfront dining rooms of these fine resorts, guests
can wander the beach looking for roosterfish and sierra along the shoreline, and marvel at
the private homes lining portions of the coast. Many of the homes mirrored the
stucco, stripped logs and overlapping palm thatched architecture of the people who have
lived in the area for thousands of years, albeit with modern conveniences like satellite
dishes and multi-stall garages for boats and various desert-related motor vehicles. |
| The sunrise over the Sea of Cortez
is one of nature's true gifts to early rising fishermen. After a hearty breakfast
anglers often enjoy wandering out onto the beach to watch a vintage 4x4 weapons carrier
launch the mobile pier that allows game boats to board their clients (the East Cape area
lacks a marina). Nearly every resort has one. The waters of the
East Cape have attracted sport fishermen for the best part of a century. Exquisite
vistas, comfortable accommodations, great food, friendly people and excellent fishing, all
at some of the most reasonable prices in the entire Pacific basin, make for a fishing
vacation worth going back for. |
