capacity to 12 guests to help ensure you receive it. And with an informal schedule that
allows as much fishing time as you’d like, Big Eddie and Joe have set a new standard
for hospitality in the Republic of Kiribati. |

The frame of the lodge was built in 1999 of
cinder blocks hand made, set, and dried on the island. Set on top of the former British
army hospital center, they used a large existing concrete pad as the foundation. Eight
rooms, each with two single beds and a map of the island on the wall, adjoin the spacious
common area where meals and social gatherings take place. The entire building, though
supported by concrete and steel and properly wired and plumbed, has a distinct local feel
thanks to the abundant use of palm fronds, stumps, and bark. Everything from the roof to
the trim accents in the rooms uses the palm tree, and the result is a quaint, inviting
atmosphere in which to relax and enjoy. Even the bar counter is trimmed out with the bark
of the palm tree. |

| Meals, all included in your package, are all
served in the dining area by the chef and wait staff. Breakfast is either eggs and
breakfast meat or hotcakes served on alternate days, and dinner usually consists of
several appetizers, fresh salads, a delicious main entrée, and some type of pie or cake
for desert. Lunch is accomplished by the setting out of several sandwich fixings you make
and place in your guide’s cooler. Fresh fruit and clean, filtered water is available
for you, as well as fresh-brewed coffee. |

During the
day as anglers fish, maids come through the rooms and make the beds, sweep the floors,
refresh the toiletries, and wash whatever clothes you leave out for them. At the end of
the day, the lodge is spotless and ready for you to relax, unwind, and talk about your
successes on the flats.
The Saturday Evening Show

And on Saturday nights (Sunday night in
Kirbati), the lodge turns in to a miniature auditorium where the Corrie family performs
some local dance numbers both as a welcome and a goodbye. You’ll find Big Eddie and Joe’s lodge to be inviting, airy, and
comfortable with plenty of local hospitality.
