Geography and Climate Of Christmas Island

Geography

Kiritimati, or Christmas Island, is the largest atoll in the Pacific.  The atoll covers 222 square miles and is part of the Line Islands which belong to the Republic of Kiribati.  The island is very flat with hundreds of square miles of pristine flats surrounding the island.  There are more than 100 lakes or ponds on Kiritimati.

The village of London is located at the Trevally Channel and is the main village on the island.  The other major villages are Tabwakea Village,  Poland and Banana Village.  Travel between the villages and fishing spots is done either by boat or by car or truck on paved roads (roads are denoted on the map by the dotted lines).

Climate

Christmas Island is located 115 miles north of the equator, so the weather is warm year round.  Temperatures range from 80 to 85 degrees during the day, and 70 to 75 degrees at night.  Fairly steady tradewinds of 10 to 20 knots keep the humidity moderate, and there is minimal rainfall.  The sun rays are very intense near the equator, so we recommend anglers bring plenty of sun protection including 45 SPF or higher sunscreen, hat and light protective clothing.
